WebRecords of births, marriages and deaths at sea were kept by the masters of British ships. Following the Merchant Shipping Act of 1854, they were obliged to send on the information recorded relating to the birth or death at sea of English, Welsh, Scots and Irish people (as well as anyone else aboard) to the Registrar General of Shipping and Seamen. WebRegisters of birth, baptisms, death, burials and marriages which were collected by the Non-Parochial Registers Commissioners of 1857, or which were later deposited for safe custody at the General Register Office and the Public Record Office.
